Cetina Canyon

The significant landscape of the Canyon of the Cetina River stretches from the Tisno to the mouth since 1963. The Italian biologist and travel writer Alberto Fortis wrote about the Cetina canyon as early as 1774 in his work "A Journey through Dalmatia". The protected part of the canyon is diverse. In some parts, the sides of the canyon are quite spread out and relatively flat, so there are underwalls of formerly cultivated areas, but which today are mostly barely visible because they are overgrown with maquis and forest, due to the abandonment of traditional agriculture. In some sections, the canyon is extremely narrow and has steep, vertical cliffs. Velika and Mala Gubavica waterfalls are a special attraction. The canyon itself, by the way, is a geomorphological phenomenon characteristic of karst, where the river is cut into the limestone bedrock by the action of water. As a reminder of the turbulent history of these regions, numerous medieval fortifications stretch along almost the entire course of the Cetina River. Some of them are well hidden and partially destroyed, while others still stand proudly on their heights today and serve as viewpoints from which you can see the canyon.
